Social media plays a critical role in today’s world. It’s tied to our personal life, social causes, businesses, and especially our job search.

At The Collective Rising, we understand an individual’s need to stand out and differentiate themselves from the pack, especially when it pertains to the ever-competitive job market. Here are some tips on how you can make social media work for you and your personal brand during your job search.

Tip #1 Be authentic and don’t sell yourself short.

Make sure the content you post reflects who you are and your values. Also, don’t be afraid to share your personal and professional achievements. While bragging is off-putting, don’t shy away from sharing moments of genuine happiness and success.

Tip #2 Have a professional profile and “clean” profile.

This tip is relative to your industry. Some industries are more strict while some industries are a bit lenient, thus making it challenging to identify what you should or should not post. A good rule of thumb is never post anything that has the potential to be perceived as hateful, defamatory, or discriminatory.

Tip #3 Don’t forget your links.

If you are a creative professional and have a portfolio, website, or blog, don’t forget to include links to these materials on your social profiles. By doing so, you provide hiring managers with easy access to view your skills and talents. Your SEO-optimized profile on The Collective Rising’s platform allows you to include all your social media accounts and personal sites in one place with ease.

Tip #4 Add your social handles to your resume.

The social handles you choose to include on your resume are relative to the position that you are applying for and the industry. However, no matter what job you’re applying for, you should include a link to your profile on The Collective Rising and your LinkedIn profile to ensure that employers can quickly learn more about you and find you on these platforms.

Tip #5 Choose the right platforms.

From Twitter to Instagram, you can choose to be active on several social media platforms. At The Collective Rising, we believe that it is better to share quality content rather than content in large quantities. Figure out what platform feels most natural for you to use, then commit to being active on that platform, such as sharing valuable content at least once per week.  If you like Twitter, each week aim to post at least one original tweet as well as re-post two tweets from thought leaders you respect.

Social media is a resource you can use to propel you forward during your job search. By ensuring you have a visible online presence and are active on at least one social platform, you can better position yourself to attract and connect with recruiters and hiring managers.
