How do you define success?

Success to me is being engaged in work that you are passionate about, a role from which you can learn and grow, and one that supports you in achieving your financial goals. To me, it’s also crucial that I’m surrounded by my family and friends while striving for this level of success, as they’re the ones who ground me and inspire me everyday. It can be difficult to seize an opportunity that possesses all of these aspects - doing so can take time, it can require re-shaping your career path, building meaningful connections and relationships, as well as taking risks. I definitely haven’t reached this point of success just yet as I’m quite early in my career. However, I do know that with the choices I’m making and the actions I’m taking, I’m surely but slowly making my way to a career that will provide me with all of those things - and that’s what matters most to me.

What are you most grateful for?

My family and friends. When we left our hometown in Dhaka and moved to Jakarta and later Dubai, although I never grasped it at the time, my parents made some of the biggest sacrifices in their life. They lived miles away from their family, culture, and hometown in order to create the incredibly privileged life my brother and I were living. They had to learn how to adapt, adjust, and make the most of every situation so that we could seize opportunities and live out our own dreams. Their unconditional love and unwavering support have helped me arrive at where I am today. My friends have undoubtedly, also been an invaluable part of my life. Growing up as an introverted Third Culture Kid, it was always difficult for me to open up, be vulnerable, and share my full self with the people around me. But my friends made me confident in my identity and helped me blossom into the compassionate and driven woman I’m proud to be. I’m so excited to see my friends grow and accomplish amazing things and I’m forever grateful to have been a part of their life.

What is a recent accomplishment you are proud of?

In every city I’ve lived, I’ve always witnessed a stark contrast between the life I was living and the lives of others. Soon I realized that the unique mixture of luck, privilege and hard work (of my parents’ and a bit of mine) landed me in a position where I could harness these opportunities to truly make an impact. I was determined to spark positive, tangible change, so I wrote The Impact Mind: Unlocking Your Ability to Create Change. My book uncovers the 14 key principles that can help you become a more impactful individual and make a difference in society. Through insights from leaders across emerging industries - such as social entrepreneurship, impact investing, international development, and much more - my book helps to pave a path to creating impact in today’s globalized world. The Impact Mind is a non-fiction book that speaks to driven and ambitious individuals who are looking to explore impact-oriented roles and shape their life around their mission.

What are your three best habits?

1) Being intentional about the time I spend with family and friends. Working is awesome and it’s especially great if it’s something you love, but it’s just as important to set aside time to enjoy your life with the people that matter. At the end of the day, my family and friends are the reason I’m here, they’re the ones who inspire me, and I want to spend as much time as possible with them. 2) Persevering no matter the task at hand. Whenever I’m faced with a difficult feat or an ambitious goal, I’m determined to tackle it regardless of the time it takes me. Doing so requires patience, but by seeking out the help or support I may need, perseverance helps me achieve what I’ve set out to accomplish. 3) Taking breaks when needed. It’s impossible for me to concentrate on a task for more than an hour, so it’s absolutely necessary for me to take a break to watch a Netflix episode, scroll through social media, or go out for a walk to re-energize, relax, and return with a new attitude.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

You can make a change in the world. An incredible friend, mentor and amazing human being imparted these words to me which have forever changed my perspective on how to make a positive impact. I had previously thought that for my contributions to truly make a difference, I had to reshape every system and institution in place - whether that be the government or the economy. I had burdened myself with the belief that I had to address every issue that has ever existed. But now I have come to the conclusion that even if I can only make a small dent in the world, it’ll still be worthwhile. My hope is that people aren’t discouraged by all the problems we have left to solve. But rather, they are fired up by the prospect of being able to solve an aspect of one of them, because that can change the lives of one or a few people. And that is still valuable and worthy of pursuit.
