I left my employed position at a community health center in 2017 to open an independent direct primary care office. I knew how to be a doctor. I didn't know how to be a business owner, an entrepreneur, or a boss. I had to have faith that I would figure some things out as I went along and not wait until I had every piece figured out to take action.
Having a practice where people can feel comfortable to be their true selves and be open about what their struggles/dreams are so I can work with them on their health.
When I was deciding about whether or not to go to med school I was all worried about how I was going to be 30 before I was established in a career. My uncle pointed out to me that I was going to be 30 either way - and I should think about what I wanted to be doing when I was 30 - and not worry so much about the time line.
Being a new breastfeeding mom during medical school and residency 20years ago. This was back before work hour restrictions. I would have to work 36+ hour shifts sometimes. There were no breastfeeding lounges back then. I had to pump in the bathroom, someone's office, or a call room. You were expected to self-sacrifice and put work needs in front of your own physical/emotional needs, or your family's needs - and made to feel that you were a burden on the practice if you needed to do anything other than what your male colleagues were doing. I was told to my face at one point in time that I was not going to be considered for a position because I was a mom with younger children. I am so glad things have changed!
That I shouldn't consider opening my own business - that I didn't have the "personality" for it. It did hurt my feelings, but I obviously didn't listen to him.
