Tell us about a professional goal you have made strides towards this year.

I have landed my first internship within the gallery and museum sector this year. This is the first time I'm getting experience outside of academia. I have been able to use some of the information from classes, but learning about the organization and working with my supervisor has been a great experience.

What are your career aspirations?

I have many career aspirations. My main career aspiration is to end up in the museum sector as a curator or art director. However, I am also interested in financials and outreach, so I would be happy within many positions within a museum, or a non-profit in general. While I don't plan on it being my main source of income, I am planning on continuing my own art practice and selling pieces.

What is one piece of conventional advice you strongly disagree with?

I strongly disagree with the advice that pursuing a career within the arts is a dead end, only for teachers, and will lead to financial struggles. Careers in the arts and humanities are so abundant and diverse now within the for-profit and non-profit worlds and with time and dedication, having it be a primary source of income is realistic. This stereotype kept me from majoring in Studio Art, and while I do not regret my areas of study, I do regret going in with this mindset.

What has been one of the largest professional obstacles you have had to overcome?

Getting real world experience is one of the hardest obstacles I've had to overcome. I didn't have any experience in the art, museum, and non-profit worlds other than from academia which made finding internships next to impossible. It took four semesters before I landed any internships. It is one of the hardest and most deflating things to be rejected when you're just trying to gain experience, but keep trying. Someone will give you a shot.

What is the best part about working in your industry?

I am currently working in an art gallery and one of the best things is being surrounded by amazing artwork. The gallery also is heavily involved in community artists and houses artist studios, so interacting with the artists and seeing the progression of their work is amazing.
