What advice would you like to share with the next generation?

Science is for EVERYONE. I do a lot of statistics and coding in my work, and I want the next generation, especially young girls, to know that maths isn’t that hard, and statistics like other skills can be learned. You don’t necessarily have to be naturally good at it to be successful, just be willing to work hard.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I want to leave our oceans in a better place than they are now, by working together. I want scientists and researchers like myself to be chatting with everyone – asking and answering questions in equal measure. A world where people think of sharks and other predators as more than their teeth. Where everyone has access to the latest scientific knowledge so we can all benefit from it. How about you come on a dive with me (or on a boat if that’s more your thing – or just watch some of my snapshots on social media if it comes to that) and share our tales. I promise to be the scientist who listens! I want to share my passion with everyone both through my talks as a professional speaker, a television series host and my Youtube channel where we adventure around this amazing planet and spend time with the critters we rarely see ... featuring sharks and other predators - of course.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I lived in China for a few years and speak Mandarin Chinese - this is something that surprises a lot of people. I have lived on three continents and travelled to more than 40 countries ... and can't wait to explore more. As I'm a scientist, another revelation that people are often surprised to hear is that I used to be a model and that I'm almost 6 foot tall ... my field buddies normally comment on this when I'm in my fieldwork gear after diving for days on end! Also I love to teach! Whether it's English and Science in China, or about sharks and other predators through my global public speaking events, I find that when I see that 'aha' moment in my audience when they start to think of sharks as more than their teeth - that is inspirational to me.

What is a recent accomplishment you are proud of?

I’m still smiling as I recently recorded the first episodes of my radio show! I am SO excited for everyone to hear it. After I said 'yes' to doing live TV earlier this year I've had so many encourage me to continue broadcasting and hosting. I’m in the midst of starting up my YouTube channel alongside the radio show to showcase our weird and wonderful natural world. Shortly you'll be able to read my children's book about diversity and marine conservation - though the eyes of a shark! Number one though, would be submitting my PhD thesis! My research focussed on where sharks are, why are they there and if there are more sharks now then there used to be. I also looked how climate change may affect sharks and where we will find them in the future. That was a huge accomplishment for me and I’m so grateful for everyone that helped me get there. Finally, I can’t wait to be working with The BBC and The Naked Scientists this year. Fingers crossed I get to work with them in-person in the UK, otherwise, I'll be working remotely from my home in Australia. I can't believe that this came about because they saw one of my talks and after a competitive process invited me to work with them.

What is the most exciting part of your job?

No contest, it's spending time in the ocean ideally with sharks. As a marine biologist and shark scientist I’ve studied and worked with over 30 species of sharks and rays (they are related, you know), and there is so much more to learn about them. I love spending time in the ocean, diving with sharks, recording their behaviour and learning more about their world. I love communicating this with others, whether it’s through social media or ‘zooming’ into classrooms and community groups. Their questions always keep my on my toes.
