Don’t be afraid of failure. Too many times I’ve kept myself from trying something simply because I was afraid to fail. One of my favorite questions is “what would you do if you knew you could not fail?”. But my counter to that is, what keeps us from doing just that? Fear is perhaps my biggest barrier but overcoming it has reaped the greatest rewards so my last words of advice are to not fear failure.
I want to be known for my compassion and for my philanthropic efforts. There are so many ways to give back whether you’re the newest hire of a company or the CEO. I think there’s a celebrity factor that comes with climbing the corporate ladder but I admire the humility of leaders who aren’t afraid to be part of grassroots efforts to give back. I want to be known as that type of leader regardless of my job title.
My favorite quote is “Keep Moving Forward”. It’s a famous Disney quote but I learned about it from the movie “Meet the Robinsons”. This little boy was frustrated by his failures and his friend would respond with “keep moving forward”. It’s hard to pick yourself up after a failure or wrong turn, but the only way through it is forward and to keep trying.
I think people would be surprised to know that I went to a medical high school and once aspired to be an OBGYN. I have a love for health science, especially women’s health. Though I don’t get to work directly in the field, it’s part of why I spend my extra time giving back to The Women’s Fund of Houston who’s mission is to teach health and resiliency skills to adolescent girls. I love the science and the health benefits and being able to teach to make the next generation of girls stronger and healthier.
I feel most fulfilled when I teach someone something new about their personal finances. I can see the questions on the tip of their tongue and the concern they have, and it’s so rewarding to see the light bulb go off and the mind of mind wash over them at the end of our meeting. It makes the rejection and difficulty of the job worth it and remind me of the difference I get to make in my clients lives.
