Do you ever find that there are things about you people misunderstand? If so, what are they?

I think people misunderstand that I feel the freedom to freely express myself. For me, living my truth is a work in progress. It started by acknowledging that I felt inhibited to be myself; that corporate culture had influenced me to think I had to be the same as everyone else and develop the persona of what I thought a successful professional woman was. By taking the time to connect with myself through dance, yoga, and meditation, I have been able to explore what it means to feel fully expressed which has included getting back to writing and blogging.

What are you most grateful for?

My family. It might sound cliché, but they are my biggest advocates and strongest supporters. Growing up, my brother and I were given the same opportunities, held to the same standards, and equally encouraged to pursue excellence in academics, sports, and the arts. I realize now how important and impactful it was that I was raised in a family of feminists, whether we knew it or not. I was always told I was capable of anything and praised for being smart, ambitious, and caring. This strong foundation has supported me throughout my career and side hustles as I truly believe what my parents always told me: I'm capable of anything I put my mind to.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Having spent 10 years in the technology industry as a sales representative, many people are surprised to learn that I dedicated most of my youth to dance and pursued my passion for it by heading to California after graduating high school. After dancing, traveling, and teaching for a few years, I co-founded a dance studio and performing arts centre while completing my education with a degree in Biochemistry, and a second degree in Business. Although I no longer teach dance, I'm constantly motivated by the need for movement in my day-to-day life whether it's running, lifting, yoga, swimming, or dancing too!

What has been one of the largest professional obstacles you have had to overcome?

The largest professional obstacle I continue to overcome is being a woman in technology. Working in a male dominated industry can be a challenge for a number of reasons, especially because leadership teams often lack diversity. What I've learned is most important, is we continue to speak up for women, especially when they aren't in the room. There are still times where I feel judged for looking too young, too serious, too quiet, or worse, too loud. But I’ve learned that the worst thing I can do is say nothing: if I stay quiet and step aside, nothing changes. If you have a seat at the table, it is your responsibility to be yourself and to speak up. And if you aren’t going to your voice, give your seat to someone who is ready to use theirs.

What is your favorite phrase or saying?

In Oprah's "What I Know For Sure", she explains her philosophy to "work hard, play well". This has stayed with me throughout my career as I work hard to enjoy the lifestyle that brings me joy and fulfillment.
