If I could start over, I would get a degree in Marketing or Business instead of my Bachelor of Science. I thought FOR SURE I was going to be a doctor or something in the medical field because that's what the traditional idea of "success" is - plus, I was good ENOUGH at math and science in high school (lol). What I totally neglected to realize was that I needed to do something in my career that inspired me and made me happy each and every day not just "successful" down the line... truth be told, the rigorous science curriculum made me miserable. I don't regret this decision because I'm a firm believer of "everything happens for a reason", but knowing how much I love what I do now, I think it would have made my experience in college that much more enjoyable AND I would have an even greater wealth of knowledge going into my career.
This year my goal was to get 120,000 new users registered on our platform. When I first saw this number in December of 2019 I could feel the lump in my throat - how the HECK was I going to do this? I sat down and planned, strategized, and built a team around me who was equally committed to not only reaching this number but stomping on it. The year is far from over, and who would have thought we'd be experiencing everything we are today, but every day brings us a step closer to achieving this... I will do it!
I truly believe my greatest strength is my ability to innovate and simply get shit done. Early in my career, whenever I had an idea, I came at it from this perspective that if I want to get this idea off the ground, I'm going to own the entire thing and prove that this idea is worth investing further resources in. Through this grit and desire for success I was able to teach myself skills I never would have learned otherwise, like social media management, community management, graphic design, product management - all which led to the successful launch of one product or another. Now that I am a leader, I understand that it's impossible to own a project from start to finish without any input from your team, but because I've always worked on lean teams it's given me a lean leadership mentality - I encourage my team to think along these lines, to innovate, and take on new projects which has led us to some incredible things.
The biggest risk I've ever taken at work actually led me to the career I have today. I worked for a small startup for a few years as I was studying for grad school and we happened to experience a major product recall that impacted over 5 million users making our product completely unusable. At the time, we had no community management, no social media management, and a very small marketing team. Because I had handled social media for a few different programs in college, my boss asked if I could help out with the public response - needless to say I took the opportunity and ran with it. Not only was I able to completely control the public perception of our brand, but the trust from our community via new channels and a fresh perspective. Shortly after, I was asked to join the marketing team permanently - this risk quickly became an unconventional start to my marketing career.
My career goal is to reach the C-Level.
