Do you ever find that there are things about you people misunderstand? If so, what are they?

I've been told that people find me intimidating at first because they think I have a picture perfect life. I find joy in beautiful things, especially fashion, so I can see how my appearance can give that impression! However, people quickly find that I'm straightforward, down to earth, and even a little bit crass when the situation requires.

Tell us about a time you showed compassion at work.

One of my clients was a woman who owned a business and worked from her home office. Her husband had used the closet in her home office for storage, and had passed away a couple of years before. She finally decided she was ready to get organized and tackle the whole room so that she would be happier and more productive in her work life. There were many moments during the project when I simply sat with her and listened. I was there for her to tell stories about her beloved husband, find precious surprises among his things, and cry over what she had lost. It was a truly profound experience, and giving her that space allowed her to fully embrace the process and emerge with a result she loved.

What are you most passionate about?

I'm passionate about the power of simple things to change our lives. Getting organized is not rocket science, but an organized space is extremely powerful. It acts as a sanctuary from the outside world, supports the close relationships that matter most, and saves us time and energy we need for more important priorities. I truly believe that getting organized can change someone's life profoundly.

What advice would you like to share with the next generation?

Interrogate your assumptions, even the small ones.. So much of what we think, do, and say is because we are following well-worn social grooves. For example, many of my clients are dual income professional couples with equally powerful careers. And yet, in almost every case, both partners assume that it is the woman who should take on primary responsibility for the home, including home organizing, and this results in confusion, resentment, and disorganized spaces. I think if couples took the time to sit down and talk through what they want their homes to look like and actively divide up the work, instead of relying on assumptions, they'd be happier and their homes would be more beautiful places!

What is a rule you try to live by?

The golden rule: treat others the way I want to be treated.
