How do you define success?

Success is making an impact. For me, this is about being heavily involved in something that is bigger than just me and brings positive change in more than just my life. Yes, I would love to build new technology and make my mark in the industry, but doing that in a way where I give back to those around me is the epitome of success.

What advice would you like to share with the next generation?

Learn from our mistakes. Take what we did and make it better. Within your own generation, there will be times where you feel you aren't doing what everyone else is doing and the pressure to conform is real. It might seem like everyone around you is having a good time when you are working on your personal development, but that should never stop you. Consistently learning and growing more than "normal" will never be a regret.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I want my contribution to the world of technology to be one with integrity. There is so much pressure to become a CEO, founder, or sell your software for millions, but your value is not based on whether you had the right amount of luck or skill to accomplish this. My value is based on the morals which shape my everyday work and interactions- not taking shortcuts, mentoring others, and giving back when I take is what I want to be known for.

What do you think is your greatest strength?

Learning to embrace failure and using it as fuel for motivation to improve has become my greatest weapon. There are times where you don't get the job you were after or you don't accomplish something you always envisioned you would, but that is statistically bound to happen. I use failure as a reason to reflect on my weaknesses, accept it was not meant to be, and determine how to come out of it stronger. It always ends up in my favor because I learn more than I would have otherwise one way or another.

What is a rule you try to live by?

My life philosophy is to continuously improve my emotional intelligence- this may surprise some people considering I've been studying numbers and science just about my whole life. Understanding how your innate behavior affects your lifestyle, work, and others around you is key no matter what you're doing. Improving your emotional intelligence will help foster relationships, work efficiently, and gain clarity. I strive to learn more about myself and that has taught me how to handle crucial life moments with grace.

About

My name is Nilo and I work as a Senior Software Engineer. Technology and engineering have been passions of mine since I was a young kid and it has shaped who I am. Outside of my everyday work, I dream of making impactful changes in the world of technology. This includes helping making room for other women who want to break into tech with ease.
