In the past, I have measured my success by my job title and the organisation I am affiliated with. I now measure success by how much of my time is taken up by doing work that makes me happy and brings me joy and by how much time I am able to put into spending time with the people I love.
Quitting my lectureship at King's College London to run the business was a huge risk. I had built up some work before I left and I was happy with the trajectory but I wasn't confident. With support and encouragement from my friends and family I was able to take the leap and I am very glad I did!
Nutrition is such a broad field and such a young science that it's hard to ever get bored. I am also able to use my knowledge to help people who are suffering and to support them through difficult times which is very fulfilling. With so much interest in nutrition, there is always something new to comment on or share information about which keeps me on my toes and engaging with the public!
I want the next generation of dietitians to know their worth and to feel confident to share their expertise publicly. Nutritional science isn't controversial but the public see nutrition as controversial so whatever you say, there is always someone who want to shout you down. I want dietitians to own their space as THE medical nutrition experts and not feel that they need to use their bodies or take photos of food in order to get the public engaged with nutritional science.
There is currency in kindness.
