Share a piece of advice or a lesson you wished you learned earlier in your career.

There is power in saying “no.” It took me a good few years to understand this. When I was first starting my business, I always wanted to say “yes”, including sometimes to projects that might not have been a fit for my agency. Remain focused on what you do well and who you want to work with. Saying no sometimes helps your business thrive.

What opportunities, projects, or professional plans do you have for this year?

My goal in 2021 is to empower more women to experience creativity on a daily basis, become conscious consumers of fashion, and gain confidence in their lives through the clothes that they choose to wear. By trade, I am a full-time agency copywriter, though I wear multiple hats—creating content, developing brand strategies, and writing copy for some of America’s biggest retailers. My evenings and weekends are spent working on side-hustles with creative entrepreneurs, women-led small businesses, marketing unique selling points and helping them build businesses from the ground up.

Tell us about a recent experience that has sparked growth, new insight, or played a role in your professional development?

I lost my mother suddenly last Fall and it has given me perspective about my goals and what I want to accomplish in my life. I am more driven than ever to grow my website and eventually own my own business, and my mom is a huge part of the desire I have to be the best person and professional I can be, as she was one of the first supporters of my work.

I work full-time as a consulting engineer for a geotechnical firm; I specialize in fixing landslides that affect roads and structures. Each project I take on is unique and poses its own challenges which keep my day-to-day work quite interesting. I also have a side business in which I make artisanal soaps.

Serve your community first and then leverage the data you collect second. People should always come first. In my work, this plays out by taking care to make sure every client feels seen, heard, and known, and by creating killer brand experiences. The next best piece of advice I’d share is to make sure you know your numbers and collect as much qualitative information as you can.

Earlier in my career, I wished I was willing to take things slower and plan further ahead instead of jumping on every opportunity that came my way, without assessing whether or not it was a good fit for me at the time. However, all my experiences got me to where I am today, so I wouldn’t change a thing.

I am a Syrian-Venezuelan screenwriter, filmmaker, and educator. One of my favorite things about storytelling is that I have the opportunity to make interior life visible, and also show that exterior life can be worth a second look. I like to write grounded sci-fi drama stories that highlight themes of multiculturalism and identity formation.

Tell us about a recent experience that has sparked growth, new insight, or played a role in your professional development?

Something that continues to spark growth for me is being honest, vulnerable and open about my experiences with my screenwriting process. I have been working hard to learn to detach myself from any outcome. Reflecting on all of this led me to launch a newsletter for MENA creators titled “Screenwriting &” where I discuss screenwriting and everything in between. It is my hope that this newsletter will inspire other women working in screenwriting who are on their way up in their careers.
